One Wilshire / Monolith Zero
The total and utter destruction of One Wilshire is not an allegory about erasure of some of the most important documents in the world, it is also a story about the killing of a solid monolith.
The killing of this monolith will cause mass amnesia as we forget the documentation of much of our society. It will cause mass hysteria because a society will be united under a public execution. It will drive up and down local real estate values, politics, economics, and a new scale of morality.
How do you kill that which is a solid monolith? Paint it black, beige, or green? Inhabit the interior and misuse the building programmatically? Gut the insides of the building? Or, simply blow it up? Do you have to physically kill the monolith to kill it? Can the monolith be censored, and by doing so is it as good as dead? Must it be a public execution?
Will we forgive? We will, because without the monolith. We will rearrange the facts and make myth. The post monolith pile of rubble will offer us a new and healthy sense of ambivalence because we will forgive and not forget. No documents, no debts.
