Place: Shenzhen, China

Lost and Found is an installation for the Bi-City Biennial in Shenzhen and Hong Kong. This project displays a group of objects, arranged in an urbanistic way inside a lightbox.

All of the objects were purchased from a dollar store in the US. However, these objects all originally came from the Pearl River Delta and were shipped out of Shenzhen. We brought the team of lost toys back to their home for a class reunion.

As these objects were mailed in a box back through the Pacific Ocean a second time, this is a journey of homecoming. By bringing home an urbanism of lost souls, neatly placed in a cordial formation like a team of misfit school friends on photo day. We established a “Rule of Shopping” guide to help us find objects with architectural and urban qualities. In particular, we were keen on identifying objects with the potentials of communicating cute, friendly, yet dark and mysterious atmospheres. By juxtaposing several personalities next to one another, we are able to find a network of possible relationships.

The Lost and Found objects were exhibited inside a 15' x 15' x 4' Lightbox. The interior of the lightbox has a 7'x7' grid of white acrylic, between 18 columns. The two interior walls are clad with mirrors. While the two exterior walls are clad with transparent plexiglass, revealing a truss structural system in its translucency.
