Furniture Urbanism is an indoor installation at the inaugural Chicago Architecture Biennial in 2015.
Furniture is a signifier of architectural programs. Chairs, beds, tables or desks instruct actions, and indicate whether a room is an office, bedroom, dining room, or more. After all, it is the affordances of the furniture’s dimensions that give each furniture meaning, and consequently give each room its function.
When the density of furniture becomes too high, the implied actions of each furniture begins to send conflicting messages. The room transforms into a jungle of dimensions with no possible actions. In this state of congestion, the rooms return to a primitive state with no program.
