Moonshine is an indoor installation for the 2017 REDCAT Gala inside the Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, by the invitation of curator Ruth Estavez.
Not all light sources are self-illuminating. Like the moon, this installation does not emit light of its own, but rather bounce external sources off of its surface. Working with lighting designer Matthew Johns, we suspended our floating structures above the gala like a flying fleet of passive chandeliers.
The boxes are designed with an afterlife in mind: the display podium becomes a rare item during final review seasons or exhibition openings. What if we flipped a bunch of display boxes upside down, and re-used them later? As this installation is temporary, we dimensioned each individual component to match the standard sizes of display podiums.
